The Challenge

Vestaboard is a beautiful split-flap display, but a physical board costs hundreds of dollars and takes up wall space. Plenty of teams want the aesthetic on a TV they already own — without buying hardware, installing apps, or asking IT for anything. The bar: open a URL, get a Vestaboard.

What I Built

A full-screen browser viewer that turns any TV, monitor, or laptop into a Vestaboard display. Just open the URL on any screen — no extra hardware, no installs, no native app. Works on smart TVs, conference room displays, and digital signage rigs.

Architecture Decisions

Everything renders in the browser so the deployment story stays one sentence long. The split-flap animation is rebuilt from scratch rather than approximated with fades — the flip is the product, and smart-TV browsers are underpowered, so the animation had to be cheap enough to run smoothly on the worst screen in the building. No accounts and no installs was a design decision, not a shortcut: signage that requires login never stays on the wall.

What I'd Do Differently

Test on actual smart-TV browsers earlier. Desktop Chrome is a flattering development target, and the real constraint — aging TV web engines — showed up late and forced animation rework that could have shaped the design from the start.

The Result

A zero-cost way to put Vestaboard-style messages on any screen in the building. Shipped under Checkmate Labs, and the proof-of-concept for the studio's signage line that BoozeBoard later built on.
