The Challenge

Most fitness apps track workouts in isolation, and solo tracking fails for a simple reason: nobody notices when you quit. People stick with goals when a real person is watching — but partner-based accountability barely existed as a product category. The design problem: make skipping a workout socially expensive without making the app feel punitive.

What I Built

AccountabiliBuddy pairs users with accountability partners and makes the commitment mutual. Goal setting, progress tracking, partner matching, and motivational check-ins — the partner sees your streak, and you see theirs. Built with React Native and Expo, shipped to the App Store as a Checkmate Labs title.

Architecture Decisions

The core bet: the partner relationship is the product, so every feature routes through it — there is no solo mode to hide in. Check-ins are lightweight and asymmetric (a tap, not an essay) so the accountability loop survives busy weeks. Partner matching favors overlapping schedules over similar fitness levels, because a partner who's awake when you are beats one who lifts what you lift.

What I'd Do Differently

Prototype the matching flow with real pairs before building the full goal system — early testing showed the first 48 hours of a partnership decide whether it survives, and that onboarding window deserved more of the initial build than it got.

The Result

A social fitness experience that sits between solo tracking apps and paying for a coach: real human accountability at app-store prices. It's the flagship Checkmate Labs product and the clearest expression of the studio's thesis — small apps that change behavior beat big apps that log it.
