Checkmate Labs
Built in 2026
Technologies: Software Studio, Mobile Apps, Web Apps, Games
The Challenge
After years of shipping side projects under no banner, each launch started from zero — no shared identity, no shared infrastructure, no compounding reputation. The work needed a studio brand that could hold mobile apps, web apps, and games under one strategy-first identity.
What I Built
Checkmate Labs: a one-person software studio named after chess, because every project starts with thinking a few moves ahead. It's home to AccountabiliBuddy and Fade on mobile, plus a growing bench of web products — TVesta, BoozeBoard, ContextBulbs, Nexus, and MMT HQ — with more in development.
Architecture Decisions
The studio runs on a deliberate playbook: shared design language across products, shared deployment pipeline, and a bias toward shipping a real product in days rather than a roadmap in months. Every product must be explainable in one sentence before a line of code is written — if it can't be, it doesn't get built.
What I'd Do Differently
Formalize the studio earlier. The brand, the shared tooling, and the cross-promotion between products (each app credits the studio, the studio site sells the apps) turned out to compound — every year without the umbrella was a year of that compounding left on the table.
The Result
A unified identity for shipping multiple products across platforms, with an emphasis on thoughtful design, solid foundations, and continuous iteration. The studio site is now the front door: eight shipped products and counting.
